
Getting Heat Exactly Right with Clear Quartz IR Heaters
Smart kitchens are moving toward some pretty intense precision when it comes to heat. We’ve been using clear quartz infrared (IR) heaters in convection ovens to fix a common problem: the annoying gap between waiting for the air to warm up and actually getting energy into the food.
Why Quartz Actually Works
Here is the thing about clear quartz tubes—they let short-wave IR radiation slide right through without soaking it up. Instead of wasting time heating the air, the heat hits the food directly. When we build these for AI-powered ovens, we care about one thing: how fast they ramp up. These lamps hit their target temp in seconds. Because they’re so snappy, the oven’s control board can make tiny, real-time adjustments to the power. It stops that frustrating “overshoot” where the oven gets way hotter than you actually wanted.
No “One Size Fits All”
We don’t just hand out standard tubes. Every oven is different. Depending on the size of the unit, we tweak the wattage and length to get the heat density just right. But there’s a catch. High-wattage setups give you that perfect sear, but they push your wiring to the limit. You’ve got to make sure your relays and PCB traces can handle the current, or things will start overheating in the wrong places. We can customize the tube diameter and electrode spacing so these fit into tight AI modules without blocking the airflow.
The Reality Check
Precision isn’t free. Clear quartz is amazing at moving heat, but it’s fragile. One splash of cold water or a clumsy bump during installation and—crack—there goes your tube. You need the right mounting brackets to make sure there’s no unnecessary pressure on the glass. And then there are the hot spots. High-density IR heating can be aggressive. If your convection fan isn’t moving enough air around the heat source, you’ll get some parts of the food burnt and others barely touched. It’s all about balancing the IR intensity with your fan’s CFM to get a cook that’s consistent all the way across.
