
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere, direct splashes of water, and temperatures that swing from freezing to sauna-hot in minutes. If you’re looking at an IP65 rating, that’s a great start. But a waterproof seal on day one isn’t the same as a seal that still works after three years of heavy use. That’s why we don’t just trust the specs—we try to break our heaters in the lab before they ever leave the warehouse.
The sneaky side of moisture
Here’s the thing about IP65: it stops dust and water jets. But it doesn’t necessarily stop water vapor. Moisture is a gas, and it’s patient. Over time, it can seep through seals in a process called permeation. Once that vapor gets inside, it settles on the heating elements and electrical terminals. That’s when you get oxidation or, worse, a short circuit. To stop this, we toss our units into high-humidity chambers and cycle them relentlessly. We’re looking for any tiny gap where electricity might jump where it shouldn’t. If the insulation fails in our lab, it’s a failure. Period.
The “breathing” problem
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot, very fast. When the heater is on, the housing expands. When it’s off, it shrinks. Think of it like the unit is breathing. That constant expanding and contracting puts a massive amount of stress on the rubber gaskets. If a gasket loses its stretch, that IP65 rating is basically gone. We obsess over the cable entry points and the lamp interfaces because we’d rather see a seal fail on our workbench than in your shower.
Finding the sweet spot
You might think the solution is just to seal everything airtight. But there’s a catch. If you seal a unit too tightly, you trap the heat inside the chassis. Now you’ve solved the moisture problem, but you’re cooking your own internal wiring. It’s a balancing act. We spend a lot of time tweaking the design so the unit stays waterproof but can still “exhale” enough heat to stay cool. We aren’t interested in a flashy spec sheet that looks good for a month; we care about a heater that just keeps working for years.
