
Can a simple tube swap actually speed up your blow molding?
If you’re running an older blow molding machine, you know the frustration. You’re staring at the cycle times, wishing they were faster, and you probably assume the motor is tired or the PLC is just too slow. But here’s the thing: usually, the bottleneck isn’t the machinery. It’s the heat. If your preform isn’t getting hot enough, fast enough, you have to slow the whole line down. If you don’t, you end up with those annoying wall thickness issues that make a batch of bottles useless.
The secret is in the quartz
We use quartz infrared tubes because PET resin loves that specific kind of shortwave radiation. It just absorbs it better. When you ditch the generic lamps for high-density quartz tubes, you’re basically changing how the heat hits the plastic. More watts per centimeter means the preform hits that “sweet spot” temperature in a few seconds less. And those few seconds? They add up. Suddenly, you can crank up the speed without worrying about the bottles coming out wonky.
The nitty-gritty on installation
Most of these are drop-in replacements. They usually use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors, so you aren’t rewiring your entire floor just to get a boost. We build these for high-voltage setups so the wattage stays steady from one end of the heater to the other. One heads-up, though. Check your power supply first. Higher wattage means more heat, but it also means more stress on your electrical panel. If you push the wattage too high without checking your cables, you might find your wiring getting way too hot for comfort. Not a great way to start the shift.
The trade-off (because nothing is free)
More heat sounds great, but it comes with a catch. When you ramp up the infrared intensity, your cooling system has to pull its weight. If your cooling loop is a bit weak, the air around the oven starts to bake. That’s when you run into trouble with the neck of the bottle. It can overheat and deform, which is a nightmare. The trick is to balance that extra wattage with your airflow. Keep it precise, and you’re golden.
