
Can New IR Lamps Actually Speed Up Your Old Blow Molders?
If you’re running some of those older Sidel machines, you know the feeling. You’re staring at the cycle times, knowing they should be faster, but the machine just isn’t hitting the mark. It makes you wonder: if you swap out the infrared (IR) lamps for something higher-spec, are you actually going to see more bottles, or are you just throwing money at a placebo? It mostly comes down to how much heat you’re actually pushing into the plastic. The reality of old lamps Here’s the thing: lamps wear out. It’s not always obvious, but the filaments degrade and the quartz tubes get cloudy over time. You end up burning more power just to get a fraction of the heat into the PET preform. When we look at replacements, we focus on the wattage-to-length ratio. By putting a higher wattage lamp into the same spot, you increase the heat flux. It sounds technical, but in the real world, it just means you can shave a bit of time off the heating phase. Even half a second saved per cycle adds up to a lot more bottles per hour. Plug, play, and forget it We stick with shortwave halogen technology. Why? Because shortwave IR digs deeper into the PET and does it faster. The best part is the installation. Most of these use R7s or SK15 connectors, so they’re basically drop-in replacements. You don’t have to tear apart your oven or mess with the wiring. You just pull the old tube out and click the new one in. We also use heavy-wall quartz. It’s tougher. You don’t have to worry about the lamp snapping when the floor gets shaken up or during a high-pressure cleaning. The catch But wait—more heat isn’t a magic fix. When you pump more thermal energy into the oven, your cooling fans have to work harder to keep up. If your ventilation is old or undersized, you’ll start seeing “hot spots” on the preforms. That’s when you get that annoying pearlescence or uneven wall thickness. The trick is balance. Crank up the lamp power, but make sure your airflow can handle it. Keep those two in sync, and your process stays stable.
